Cuba's Fall Calendar Has a Deadline Most Locals Haven't Marked

Most autumns in Cuba look about the same. Cubafest weekend, the county fair long gone, cooler evenings on the porch at the Wagon Wheel. This one is different in a specific, dated way that residents keep missing because it sits inside a building they drive past every week.

The Route 66 Centennial Traveling Exhibit is here, and it leaves town on September 14. After that, the same panels head west and Cuba's slot in the national centennial year is closed. If you live here, the smartest use of the next several weekends is treating your own downtown like a visitor would, then flipping back into local mode when Cubafest rolls in on October 17.

The Clock on North Smith Street

The exhibit sits inside the Crawford County Historical Society at 308 N. Smith. It opened May 3 and runs through September 14, 2026, part of a state-wide series marking both the 100th birthday of Route 66 and the country's 250th. The Exhibit features nearly two dozen large-scale interpretive panels, audiovisual mini-documentaries, and educational components highlighting the diverse stories of Missourians connected by Route 66.

The core schedule is consistent year to year. The weekend events include apple butter demonstrations, band competitions, a chili cook-off, mural tours and classic car shows. Saturday's programming starts at 2:00 PM at Recklein Auditorium, which is the anchor point most locals underuse when they're trying to explain the layout to out-of-town family.

A practical note that regulars learn the hard way: the mural trail covers more than 1.5 miles of sidewalk, so supportive, comfortable shoes matter more than the weather does. Bring water even if the morning feels cool. Parking is not the problem people expect it to be. Cuba provides ample public parking near downtown and mural locations, including free street parking and small lots within easy walking distance.

Two of the neighboring stops are Skippy's in Leasburg and Public House Brewery in St. James, so if you were already going to make the loop for a Saturday, you can hit three of the ten in an afternoon.

Beyond the promotion, the fall short list still runs where it always has. According to Yelp's April 2026 update, the local rotation includes Shelly's Route 66 Cafe, East Office Bar & Grill, Frisco's Grill & Pub, Cuba Bakery & Deli, Missouri Hick Barbeque, Riviera Maya Mexican Restaurant, East Sun, and Rockfair Tavern. Frisco's runs a Paint Nite most months, and there's a session on August 12 and another on June 17 for anyone who wants a low-key weeknight out.

For a slower Sunday, Fizz Soda Fountain serves retro-style drinks in a vintage setting, which is a better answer than driving to Rolla when the kids are restless.

A Half Day Outside Town

Fall is the right time to remember what's within twenty minutes of the driveway. Two anchors:

Fanning 66 Outpost. The giant red rocker that once held the world's largest title has since been eclipsed, but it's still a working roadside attraction along Historic Route 66.
